The Artist

Martin lives and works in south Devon, UK.

His studio is situated close to both the coast and moorland, something Martin says “are environments that inspire me to deepen my connection with nature as a daily practice”.

Previous art projects have seen him working directly with wild animals, capturing fragments of their lives, in the form of footprints. Automatic drawings made by trees moving in the wind. Rain prints on carbon/glass and a series of pinhole images created with naturally occurring holes found in nature, used as the aperture to record their resting place.

Slow-light photography

Inspired by the lighting depicted in the European Dutch Masters paintings (from around the mid 1600s), I devised a method of lighting, that I have coined slow-light photography.

Painting with light, over long exposures enable me to illuminate the subject, using controlled strokes to build up over time, rather than freeze the image.

This slower, more mindful lighting process allows for very precise and subtle control to achieve that “Dutch Masters” glow, blurring the lines between paintings and photographs.
